OUR MISSION
The Gathering for Justice works to transform the criminal legal system and advance civil rights to build a beloved community grounded in justice, equity, and compassion.
By developing leaders, leveraging cultural organizing, and uniting our community's collective power across generations, we aim to dismantle systemic injustice and end racial inequity for all.
OUR STORY
The Gathering for Justice is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2005 by the late, iconic artist and activist Harry Belafonte after he witnessed a news report of a 5 year old black girl being handcuffed and arrested in her Florida classroom for “being unruly”.
OUR ISSUES
Criminal and Juvenile Justice Reform
The Gathering’s cultural organizing, rapid response, policy advocacy and convening power are grounded on catalyzing holistic and transformative changes to the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
Police Accountability
Our direct actions and campaign initiatives focus on holding law enforcement agencies accountable. We build coalitions of stakeholders and use strategies rooted in Kingian Nonviolence to move the needle.
Civil and Human Rights
We do not live single-issue lives, and The Gathering brings an intersectional approach to everything we do. We build coalitions that are intergenerational, intercultural and multi-issue, building solidarity through our approach rooted in the historical Civil Rights strategies of our elders.
